Here is what catches out-of-neighbourhood movers. The red brick pavers on Water Street were laid in the 1970s as part of a beautification that is now itself protected, along with the bollards, the lamp fixtures and the bronze statue that stood at Maple Tree Square until 2022. Those pavers are deteriorating. The City repaired brick-and-mortar sidewalks on Water Street and parts of Alexander, Carrall, Abbott and Powell between June and late October 2023, pausing through July so nothing was torn up in tourist season. Staff noted years of neglect, with many utility cuts patched in low-cost asphalt. That program fixed sidewalks only. The roadway cuts were left for later, and that is the surface a dolly crosses.
Access changes too. Water Street narrows to a single westbound lane, West Cordova becomes permanently two-way between Richards and Gore Avenue, and Maple Tree Square, the intersection of Water, Alexander, Carrall and Powell, becomes the redesigned centre. During the 2024 works there, no vehicle could pass through at all. That is a reason to plan the truck position first.
And the lanes are their own problem. Gastown’s power and telephone lines run along the laneways instead of the street, a recognised character-defining element of the district. Trounce Alley, between Water and Cordova from Carrall to Cambie, was cleared and gravelled in the late 1860s so W.R. Lewis could build a horse barn for his Royal Mail Stagecoach line, which makes it Vancouver’s first alley. Its cobblestoned piece is Blood Alley Square, with businesses fronting onto it and onto Gaoler’s Mews. So a lane here is a real access route, and a heritage surface with wires overhead.
