Why Container Moves in Vancouver Are Their Own Animal
A container move in a suburban driveway is easy. A container move in Vancouver is a paperwork job before it is a lifting job. Here is what actually gets in the way.
Strata rules come first. Most Metro Vancouver strata buildings want the service elevator booked 2 to 4 weeks ahead, and the booking is a window, not a day. Three and four hour blocks are standard, with 9 AM to 12 PM and 12 PM to 4 PM the usual slots. Sundays and statutory holidays are frequently prohibited outright, and Saturdays are often morning only. Miss your window and you are rebooking, not negotiating.
The certificate of insurance is not optional. Nearly every strata building in Metro Vancouver requires a commercial general liability certificate from the moving company before anyone touches the elevator, and it has to name the strata corporation as additional insured. Most buildings want it 48 to 72 hours ahead. Some want it one to two weeks out. We file it with your property manager or concierge before the day, so nobody is standing in the lobby arguing about paperwork with a loaded container at the curb.
Elevators are smaller than people think. Standard passenger cabs run roughly 3 feet by 4 feet up to 5 feet by 8 feet. In older buildings, plenty of elevators are under 7 feet tall or under 5 feet wide. That decides what fits and what has to come apart. Measure the cab before you plan the load, not after.
A lot of Vancouver has no elevator at all. Kitsilano has no high-rises. It is older homes, low-rise and mid-rise buildings, and the West End is stacked with older apartment stock. Low-rise means stairs. Stairs mean the container gets loaded one armload at a time, which changes how long the job takes and how you should stack it.
Where the container sits is a real problem. It needs a level, firm surface, off the grass, clear of obstructions, plus room for the truck and the lift. Container operators typically want a stretch of clearance well over a car length and around 15 feet of overhead room to set one down. Many underground parkades run 2.1 to 3.0 metres of clearance, and a moving truck will not fit under that. So the container goes on the street, and street placement means a temporary street occupancy permit from the City of Vancouver. Give it 5 to 10 business days. Overhead wires, low branches, and sloped driveways kill more drop-offs than anything else.
Then there is the weather. Wet winters are the whole personality of this city. A container door open in the rain, cardboard set down on a wet driveway, a mattress carried through a downpour. That is how stuff gets ruined. We plan around it with covered gear and a loading order that keeps soft goods dry.
Access varies block to block. Downtown loading bays get booked. Yaletown lanes are tight. East Van has laneway access some houses can use and some cannot. Check the neighbourhoods we cover and tell us the address early so we can look at it before the day.
How the Job Actually Runs
Booking. You call, we ask about the building, the floor, the elevator, the parking, and what is going in. You get the written quote before anything is scheduled. Book 2 to 4 weeks out if you are moving between May and September. That is when elevators and containers both run out.
Paperwork. We file the insurance certificate with your strata and confirm the elevator window. If the container has to sit on the street, we sort the street occupancy permit with enough lead time that it is actually approved.

How long can I keep the container?
For as long as you need it. That is the point of the model. The limit is not us, it is the permit if it is parked on the street and your strata rules if it is on common property. On private property you set the timeline.
How long does it take to load a moving container?
A studio or one bedroom is usually a 2 to 3 hour job. A two or three bedroom home is more like 3 to 5 hours. Loading it yourself without practice commonly stretches to 6 to 10 hours or more, and that is before stairs. Spread over a few evenings, most people find it comfortable.
What are the disadvantages of moving containers?
You do the packing and the lifting, which is more work than most people plan for. You need real space for the drop-off, which is the hard part in a dense city. And a container parked outside is not climate controlled, so it is a poor place to leave upholstery, fine wood, artwork or a piano sitting for weeks. That last one is why our containers go into a heated, dry, dehumidified warehouse instead of a gravel lot.
Can I use a moving container if I live in a condo or strata building?
Usually yes, but the building sets the terms. You will need the service elevator booked in a set window, an insurance certificate naming the strata as additional insured, and an agreed spot for the container that does not block the loading bay, a fire lane, or an emergency exit. We handle those pieces with your property manager.
Will my stuff get damp over a Vancouver winter?
Not in our warehouse. It is heated, dry and dehumidified, held around 50 to 55 percent relative humidity and 68 to 72 degrees, and vaults are sealed before they are racked. Outdoors is a different story, which is why we do not leave loaded containers sitting in the weather.
Are moving containers worth it?
If you want to control the timing and do some of the work yourself, they are hard to beat. If your dates are tight, your building is strict, or the load is full of heavy awkward pieces, a crew is usually the better call. Tell us the situation and we will say which one fits.
